3229 Burnet Ave. The Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati is a 30-bed pediatric burn hospital providing comprehensive acute care and reconstructive and rehabilitative care to children who have been burned. There is no charge to the patient or family for any of the medical care or services provided by Shriners Hospitals. This hospital is one of 22 Shriners Hospitals throughout North America. Burn Prevention Information More than two million people are burned each year in U.S. 300,000 people are treated annually for burns in the U.S., while 60,000 people are hospitalized each year for burn treatment The direct cost of treating fire and burn injuries is more than $1 billion/year Children account for more than 35 percent of all fire and burn injuries and deaths. Fires and burns are the second leading cause of accidental dealth for children under age 4, and the third leading cause of death for all children under age 19. "The greatest tragedy is that these injuries are preventable," states Debbie Harrell, RN, a nurse at Shriners for over 15 years and someone who has performed dozens of burn prevention programs for kids and adults. "If a child is severely burned, it takes years of therapy and multiple surgeries to minimize scarring and restore a child's ability to function independently, physically as well as mentally. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati offers volunteer positions for Shriners and people from the community. For Cincinnati Shrine Roadrunners What would our patients do without the Roadrunners! These dedicated Shrine volunteers drive hours upon hours to get our patients and their families here for clinic appointments and admissions. The Cincinnati Shriners Hospital recognizes drivers with patches and hats, once they have achieved a specific number of trips to the hospital. Research The Cincinnati Shriners Hospital had 18 ABA Abstracts accepted for presentation, April 18-21, 2001 Since the 1960, when the Shrine opened its first three hospitals specializing in burns, a child's chance of surviving a severe burn has nearly doubled. From a time when a child with a burn over 50 percent of his body had only a 50 percent chance of surviving, today the benchmark is that a child with a 98 percent burn has a 50 percent chance of surviving. Of the major advances in the treatment of burned children in the last 20 years, fully half have been direct results of the activities at Shriners Hospitals. The Cincinnati Hospital has been actively engaged in clinical and basic research since its opening. Research investigations at the Cincinnati Hospital focus on nutrition & metabolism, wound healing, immunology, and respiratory complications. One of the hospital's major achievements in recent years was the development of a feeding formula and regimen that is geared to the specific and crucial nutritional needs of burn-injured children. This diet helps to increase the patient's resistance to infection and shortens the hospital stay. The hospital has also pioneered the use of ventilatory support for burn patients with smoke inhalation injury and pulmonary complications. In addition to a special ventilation system, the hospital provides temporary bypass of a patient's failing respiratory system. This life-saving technique allows the lungs time to recover from extensive injury and represents a treatment option unavailable to burned children until a few years ago.
